Guidelines for “My Green School” Competition for Secondary Schools

Overview

Renewable energy and energy efficiency offer the greatest scope for reducing Guyana’s dependence on fossil fuels, diversifying the energy mix and attaining energy security. The wider use and exploration of cleaner renewable sources of energy is also important given the fact that Guyana possesses great potential in renewable energy sources such as hydropower, solar and bio-energy.

The Guyana Energy Agency, as part of its Energy Week observances this year, will be launching a Competition for Secondary School Students within Guyana to make a case to promote renewable energy development and reduce the carbon footprint within their respective school.

This competition is organized in an effort to sensitize youth at a secondary school level on energy use, environmental issues and sustainable development as well as encourage learning in a creative format. Also, as a complement to the “My Green School” Competition, it is envisioned that GEA would design and install a solar photovoltaic system or suitable energy efficiency technologies for a value of approximately G$2 million at one of the participating schools in the competition.

Target Participants

Students of Forms One (1) to Six (6) from schools within Guyana are encouraged to participate.

TOPIC

Inspired by the vision of the Guyana Energy Agency (“Reliable energy – economically, environmentally and socially sustainable – for all in Guyana”), students are challenged to make a case to promote renewable energy development and reduce the carbon footprint within their respective school. Participants are encouraged to show opportunities for improved energy use or efficiency this year or since interacting with the Agency.

General Guidelines for Activity

  1. Entries that do not comply with the guidelines will not be considered.
  2. Entries must be submitted in video format, preferably in MPEG-4 or MP4.
  3. The competition is open to students of Forms 1 to 6 from public and private schools.
  4. Entries must be based on the topic above in Section C.
  5. The duration of the video must be a minimum of 1 minute 30 seconds and a maximum of 3 minutes.
  6. Submissions should be sent as per section E below and must include participant’s full name, age, class, name of school and phone number.
  7. Only one video per student should be submitted and multiple entries are not eligible.
  8. Video can consist of power-point presentations, still images or a short film.
  9. Videos should include musical score or narration as deemed appropriate.
  10. Entries must be of an original concept and design.
  11. Entries must be filmed and edited or assembled using editing tools available on computers, tablets or smart phones.
  12. Feel free to use humour to portray your concept.

Submission

All submissions are subject to the guidelines above in section D and can be sent via disc, USB stick, email, dropbox or other appropriate file transfer. The deadline for submission is Friday, September 16, 2016 at 3:30 pm.

The GEA reserves the right to reject submissions which do not conform to the Guidelines as aforementioned.

By submitting an entry, the participant will be regarded as having granted the GEA the right to use the videos in broadcast and/or electronic media without any fee or payment, and for the purposes of promoting sustainable development and not for commercial purposes. Where the entry may be used, the participant will be acknowledged accordingly.

Judging and Results

  1. The entries shall be assessed by a panel of judges (not less than three judges) based on:
    1. extent to which the entry aptly captures the topic presented and incorporated themes,
    2. creative expression, originality and appeal, and
    3. any other relevant factors determined by the judges during the evaluation process.
  2. Results of the competition will be communicated to the schools in writing prior to the award of prizes.

Prizes

The best three entries would be awarded and may also be incorporated in our promotional pieces for future releases. Additionally, one of the finalist in the competition will be a beneficiary of a sustainable energy project developed by GEA.
