In pursuit of promoting cleaner transport through the growth of electric mobility and increased awareness on the benefits of transitioning to electric vehicles, the Guyana Energy Agency (GEA) hosted its first ‘EV Show and Tell’ Exhibition on Saturday, March 23, at the Amazonia Mall in Providence.
The exhibition provided a platform for patrons to experience the EVs in the country and engage with autodealers, such as Massy Motors Guyana Ltd. that showcased a new line of MG Motor UK Ltd. electric vehicles and MS Trading, as well as several electric vehicle users on the many advantages of adopting EVs.
During his feature address, Prime Minister, Brigadier (ret’d) the Honourable Mark Phillips, who holds responsibility for the nation’s energy sector, stated that: “The continuous uptake of electric vehicles on our local roadways and enhanced low carbon transportation infrastructure demonstrates the country’s gradual shift to eco-friendly transportation.”
With EVs becoming more common and a factor to reducing carbon emissions, the Government of Guyana has instituted fiscal incentives such as zero duty and taxes on electric vehicles and a 50 per cent annual write-down allowance for businesses investing in eco-friendly vehicles. Also, six electric vehicle charging stations have been installed to encourage the use of EVs and currently, 50 persons have been trained to service the vehicles as part of an electric vehicle maintenance and repair programme.
In his remarks, Dr. Mahender Sharma, CEO of the Guyana Energy Agency, highlighted that it is important to increase public awareness on electric mobility development, particularly as the country accelerates clean and renewable energy initiatives for the benefit of all Guyanese.
Dr. Sharma stated that the shift to electric vehicles is helping to fuel conversations on the country’s fast-growing sustainable transportation sector and its low-carbon pathway.
