(Santiago, Chile) October 01, 2025 – The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Guyana Energy Agency (GEA), Dr. Mahender Sharma, is attending the OLADE Council of Experts Meeting, being held in Santiago, Chile, from September 30, 2025, to October 3, 2025.

Dr. Sharma is also accompanying the Prime Minister of Guyana, Brigadier (Ret’d) the Honourable Mark Phillips, to the Energy Ministers Meeting, which is also being held in Chile, and forms a central part of the 10th Energy Week, hosted by the Latin American Energy Organization (OLADE).

Guyana’s participation in the Council of Experts Meeting and the Energy Ministers is in accordance with the provisions of OLADE’s regulations. These meetings serve as important platforms that bring together leaders, experts, and decision-makers from the public and private sectors of member countries, enabling the exchange of experiences and knowledge within the energy sector across Latin America and the Caribbean.

They also provide opportunities to evaluate the sector’s progress over the past decade and to support building a shared vision for a sustainable energy future.

As a member of the Council of Experts, Guyana maintains an active role as part of this advisory body, which is tasked with providing technical support and assistance to the Energy Meeting of Ministers and OLADE’s Permanent Secretariat. The Council is instrumental in advancing the objectives of the Organization, also serving as a preparatory commission for the Energy Ministers Meeting and implementing activities and studies as mandated by OLADE’s highest governing body. It is composed of delegates appointed by the Member States.

This year, the events are co-organized by the Government of the Republic of Chile, the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), the World Bank (WB), the Development Bank of Latin American and the Caribbean (CAF), among other key partners.

Guyana, as a longstanding member of the OLADE, remains commitment to regional energy collaboration and integration, as well as policy dialogue aimed at promoting sustainable energy development across Latin America and the Caribbean. The Government of Guyana’s transformative approach to the nation’s energy transition seeks to reduce reliance on imported fossil fuels by diversifying energy sources and ensuring affordable, reliable and stable energy access for all citizens.

Guided by the goals of the Low Carbon Development Strategy (LCDS) 2030, the GEA’s primary focus is on integrating renewable energy sources, such as solar, hydro, wind, to meet growing demand while minimizing emissions and advancing our low-carbon energy future.

Among the key agenda items for the meetings during this year’s meetings are the election of the Executive Secretary of OLADE for the 2026-2029 term; the hosting of the 10th Energy Week; an academic event titled ‘Connecting Minds, Energizing the Future’; the Latin American and Caribbean Youth in Energy Summit; the second edition of OLADE’s Awards for Energy Excellence; the Launch of the ‘White Paper on Sustainable Mobility for Latin America and the Caribbean’; the 2nd International Seminar on Energy Interconnection in Latin America, which will explore technical, political, and economic challenges; and the third meeting of OLADE’s Business Council under the theme ‘Old and New Challenges: Building LAC’s Future Energy Agenda,’ to name but a few.

OLADE is an international organization dedicated to supporting its member countries through technical assistance, cooperation, and coordination in the pursuit of regional integration, energy security, and sustainable development. As Guyana’s representative, Dr. Sharma, in his capacity as CEO of the GEA, looks forward to continued collaboration with regional partners as they work together to shape the future of sustainable, low-carbon energy in Latin America and the Caribbean.
