(Georgetown, Guyana) January 27, 2026 – In a bid to continue the expansion of low-carbon transportation infrastructure across the country, the Guyana Energy Agency (GEA), on January 13, 2026, held a stakeholder consultation on the ‘Development of Technical and Safety Requirements for the Installation of E-Mobility Charging Stations for Private and Public Use in Guyana’. The consultation brought together 15 participating entities, including representatives from public institutions, private-sector organisations, and other technical and academic stakeholders.
The consultation was conducted under the European Union (EU) EUROCLIMA programme, which is part of the Global Gateway strategy. This programme aims to build partnerships between the EU and the Latin America and Caribbean (LAC) regions to facilitate a green and just transition. It is co-funded by the EU and the German Federal Government. In Guyana, it is implemented by GIZ in collaboration with the government of Guyana, with the GEA serving as the national counterpart institution.
The consultation was a crucial step in developing a national framework for the safe installation, operation, and regulation of electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure. Participants identified key technical, regulatory, and operational considerations for both private and publicly accessible charging installations. The resulting framework is expected to be finalized by the end of March 2026.
This initiative supports Guyana’s Low Carbon Development Strategy 2030, which promotes sustainable transport and advocates for a gradual shift from fossil fuels to electricity in the local transportation sector.
As EV adoption continues to grow, the EU and the Government of Guyana are committed to establishing clear, enforceable, and locally appropriate technical and safety requirements to protect users, maintain the reliability of the electricity system, and enable the orderly expansion of e-mobility infrastructure.
